Minister Presents Bill For Solomons National University By Elliot Dawea HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Star, Nov. 9, 2012) – Education minister Dick Ha’amori yesterday tabled in parliament a bill that will turn the Solomon Islands College of Higher Education (SICHE) into the National University of Solomon Islands. Mr. Ha’amori said the bill was the beginning of a new era for the country. "Once the university is established, it will cause an evolution of social, economic and education development of this nation," the minister said. He said the objective of the university was to promote scholarship, research, free inquiry, academic excellence, and trade competence. "The university shall be concerned with education and training at the post-secondary levels, including education and training at the technical and vocation levels. My emphasis is consistent with international standards of teachings, research and other academic activities in institutions styled as institutions of higher learning." Mr. Ha’amori said Solomon Islanders were clearly hungry for higher education. "Setting up a new institution for the first time will give rise to a whole host of other unforeseen and unintended issues such as cost affordability, resources and quality."
