Australia Blamed For Conditions At Nauru Asylum Facility
Refugee advocates says Australia trying to avoid obligations

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (Radio New Zealand International, Dec. 20, 2012) – A spokesperson for an Australian refugee advocacy group says government claims of suitable living conditions at its Nauru detention centre are absurd.

The Refugee Action Coalition spokesperson Ian Rintoul says no other independent investigation, from human rights groups, has come to a positive conclusion.

Canberra says the asylum seekers get adequate care in the camps, contradicting among others the United Nations refugee commission’s latest assessment

Mr. Rintoul also says camp conditions at the centre are the Australian government’s responsibility and not Nauru’s.

"The conditions there are appalling and every investigation of the camps has revealed I think, it puts the government in a particularly embarrassing way, I mean, it’s trying to deflect the revelations suggesting that Nauru actually runs the camp, by trying to avoid its obligations and its responsibilities, that the camp is its responsibility."
