Explosion Reported At Am. Samoa Power Plant
Power temporarily knocked out in Pago Pago, Tutuila island

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (Radio New Zealand International, Dec. 10, 2012) – There was an explosion at the Satala power plant of the American Samoa Power Authority this afternoon.

Authority staff say one of the generators at the plant caught fire and exploded, knocking off power in the Pago Pago bay area, including the LBJ Hospital , the Starkist Samoa cannery and all of the eastern side of Tutuila island.

An Authority official said they were successful in restoring power in phases within an hour of the explosion.

There have been no reports of injuries.
