PACIFIC ISLANDS REPORT Pacific Islands Development Program/East-West Center NEW HOTEL HOPES TO STIR TOURISM IN MALAITA By Romulus Huta HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Star, May 5, 2008) - The Malaitan capital, Auki, on Saturday saw the opening of a classy new motel complete with a conference room. Rarasu Motel, built and operated by local building contractor Jackson Fiulaua, is situated alongside the Kwaibala River. It has 10 self-contained units and boosts potential tourism accommodation in Malaita. Its conference room can take around 100 people. The motel complex was officially opened by Malaita Premier Richard Naamo Irosaea. The building was completed in October last year and operations started. But it was not officially opened until Saturday. Built at a cost of SB$3.5 million [US$502,000], the Rarasu project was financed through the Australia and New Zealand banking group (ANZ). For Mr. Fiulaua, it is an expansion of his business activities. With lots of support from his immediate family, its fruition was seen on Saturday. The ceremony also included the blessing of the building by Father Richard Suiga. Invited guests toured the premises and were impressed by the comfortable environment.
