Learning Islands: Pedagogy and Globalization in the Pacific and Caribbean Workshop

9-11 November 2004
East-West Center
Honolulu, Hawai‘i

Final Report

The Islands of Globalization Project is organized a workshop for faculty from Caribbean and Pacific institutions to explore collaborative approaches to teaching and learning about the islands of the Caribbean and Pacific. Topics to be discussed include the development of shared curriculum; interregional learning communities; resource development and sharing; engaging and integrating popular culture; and student and faculty exchanges. The outcomes of the workshop will be posted on this website for circulation to participating and interested institutions.

Learning Islands is coordinated by Katerina Teaiwa, Terence Wesley-Smith, Center for Pacific Islands Studies, University of Hawai`i at Manoa, and Gerard Finin, Pacific Islands Development Program, East-West Center. The workshop is being held in conjunction with Moving Islands, a literary festival at the UH Manoa campus celebrating writers from the Caribbean and the Pacific.

WORKSHOP FORMAT

Each participant should bring teaching resources (syllabi, bibliographies, etc.) to share with the group and will help facilitate a discussion around one of our key topics. The facilitators are responsible for leading the discussion in each session. On the final day of the workshop each group of facilitators will meet to produce a typed summary report to share during the plenary session. Laptops will be available for use. These reports will provide the basis for the overall workshop report. We anticipate that this document will identify a program of activities and resources to further the collaborative efforts of the Islands of Globalization project.
